ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE "Social debt" has been the basis of strong communities for nearly 5000 years. When members of a community do each other favors or lend their help to other members, social debt is created. Communities strengthen as the web of social debts, sometimes called social capital, between members becomes more and more interconnected. The Social Debt Event was an experimental gathering to see if social debt can be intentionally created between strangers through an interactive game in which players ask for and receive real-life help from other players. The "results" of this experiment were positive and the ripple effects are still ongoing :)

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE Mission Codename: The Beach Below the Pavement Task Force: Leisure Date: August 22nd, 2051 The Beach Below the Pavement was an immersive workshop exploring how we can re-imagine joy & leisure in a post crisis world. Lily and Salomé, local representatives of the Joyful Collapse Coalition (JCC) took participants on a journey into a daunting future, after 'The Collapse', a social and environmental turning point that profoundly changed our human existence. Even with global unrest and climate change at an unprecedented peak, the need for joyful ways to spend our free time is more important than ever. Futurists, thinkers, urbanists, activists & citizens were invited to to play around the city, on a quest for new, non-commercial & future proof leisure.

ABOUT THE GAME W_NDER is an urban game for 2 players to get to know the city and each other in an offbeat way. The game was designed as a way to safely spend time together outside during COVID, and uses the social distancing guidelines as the core mechanic of the game. The WANDERER walks in front of the WONDERER, taking any route that sparks their curiosity. The WONDERER follows behind them, making sure to stay out of their line of sight. They WONDERER asks questions and gives playful dares to the WANDERER. The WANDERER answers and plays along, but does not ask questions back. The players may switch roles at any moment by turning to face each other. This open-ended game flips conversational norms and creates a stream-of-consciousness experience that moves players through public space in unexpected ways. Watch the trailer for an impression!

ABOUT THE PROJECT I founded Urban Playwalks Rotterdam in the summer of 2019, out of my desire to create a "play community" of other adults who were interested in urban games. I was inspired by The Situationists and their 'route derive': an anti-capitalist 'happening' about aimlessly wandering the city with others. Bruno & I design each Playwalk to be site-specific, creating a string of games that connect directly to elements of the urban landscape where we find ourselves. The UPR Meetup group eventually reached 500+ members. The Playwalks are my love letter to the weird and wonderful city of Rotterdam. Watch the trailer to get an impression!

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE A full day of outdoor play on a hidden island in the south of Rotterdam. We competed in the Improv Olympics and filled ourselves with wholesome community vibes to end the improv season before the summer break. Just pure play with the silliest folks in town. Also, my one chance to showcase my most-impressive / least-useful skill: pogo-sticking with no hands while jumping rope
